Why is Uber Leaving Kansas?

With Kansas in its rearview mirror and no turning back, Uber leaves Kansas after lawmakers make it impossible for them to stay. Many of the drivers and people who have taken full advantage of the transportation don’t understand why Uber is leaving Kansas, and it has left plenty of others wondering which states will be next to be nixed from the list.

Uber has created hundreds of job opportunities that will now leave drivers unemployed, and as for those who relied upon the safe, convenient, and affordable transportation, they will have to find other, less flexible, accommodations.

Despite Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto for the new restrictions that would be Uber’s demise in Kansas, the Senate and House both overrode this decision. Some of the lawmakers weren’t entirely sold on the idea of kicking out the app, and said they would be willing to work on a compromise.

The app hasn’t been banned, and Legislature isn’t taking direct action to prevent Uber from operating in the state, but what it has done is make new regulations that make it practically impossible to operate under. The new regulation states that all Uber drivers would have to purchase new insurance as well as pass the Kansas Bureau of Investigation background check, but Uber states that it performs its own background checks. It also doesn’t believe that the insurance is necessary.

The problem isn’t necessarily with Uber, but other ride-sharing services that are starting up and that’s why a government-provided background check would set standards as well as enforce the safety of those using these ride-sharing services.

All of this can go one of two ways; either a compromise will be made, and Uber will return to Kansas, or the company will continue to leave other states. It’s no secret that Uber has run into numerous problems with governments, so this doesn’t come too much as a surprise, more of a sudden and serious inconvenience for those rely on the ride-sharing service.
